Child hood

Artist statement

Childhood memories are something we cherish our whole lives. One object can be so special to someone and mean nothing to another person at one time.  When you’re a child you do quirky things with your family. Like special vacations and special meals these things are important memories to us when growing up. Especially family meals because a special person could have made a certain dish; and within that dish it holds memories. So, when you eat that certain dish you recall things from your past memories. Childhood memories are important because they can help use remember happy moments with family and friends rather than the sad moments.

My ideas when forming the idea for this word was that I wanted to take a certain object from a past memory and capture it in a photo. My object was my grandmother’s special coconut cake.  My grandmother would only make this cake at special times; and when she did my whole family would get so excited because.  It it was all our favorite cake because it was just so good. I remember when my grandmother would come over to make the cake. She would already have the ingredients so all she had to do was make the cake. I remember watching her drain the milk out of all the coconuts; because she said that real coconuts Is what made her cake taste so good. Then she would take her coconut shredder and start shredding them. My dad would always joke with her because sometimes she would get her skin caught in the shredder because she would shred the coconuts so hard with her knuckles. He would always joke by asking if there was any skin or blood in the cake when it was all cooked. We would always chuckle because we knew he was only joking around. That memory sticks with me every time my aunt makes it. But nobody can make my grandmothers cake because my grandmother was the best at making the cake.

For thanks giving my aunt by surprise made my grandmothers special coconut so I made me think of childhood when I would watch her make the cake. So, I made sure to take a picture of the cake. When I set up to take this picture I wanted to show it all the angles so you could see the texture in the cake and I also wanted to show the crumbliness in the cake. I took a couple different angles but when I went to go edit it I could figure out which one I wanted. But I found that I liked the one with the angle straight forward because you could see all the crumbles on the plate; Also, you could see the layers of the cake and see the flakes at the top of the cake.  When I edited it, I toned the coloring of the plate down; then also I toned the inside of the cake down a little so you could see the coconut shedding’s at the top.

These memories are a huge part of my childhood. I won’t ever forget about these times in my life. These were the happiest times of my life.
